So.......where's the maths?

What a busy week we have had.  We have set up a new challenge for Maths like a pirate and @MathsPirates.  Our challenge was to build a ballon powered raft to get our marooned pirates across the school pool.  Here is our challenge video which will go out to other schools.

1. What did you find the hardest thing about the challenge?
2. What would you do differently next time?
3. Where is the math in the Pirate Challenge?

How much did your raft cost?

Ice block sticks.........$2.00 for 50 Straws.......................$4.00 for 100 Sellotape...................$1.75 per roll Balloons.....................$5.00 for 40
Can you work out the cost of the materials you used?

Do you need more information?

Today we were inspired and influenced by this Ted talk from Tom Wujec and this photo from @daisyyellow

The marshmallow challenge TED talk

Last Monday we made a Lego tower.  We only got 100 legos and we had to try anf build the tallest tower.  We had to try not to break our tower down.  At the end of the challenge, our group won.  After, we had to measure all of the towers.  The maths was measuring the towers.

Rocket Fuel

.......Mrs C gave me the tablet.  I quickly put the lid on.  Click, click, click!  I turned it upside down and stepped back.  BOOM!  Ours made a good reddy, orangey pattern on the brown paper.  Group by group we made more explosions.  Afterwards we took the paper back to class for the back of our treaty.

Colour Explosions

On the 12th of February the STEAM group at Koraunui School did colour explosions.  We did it to make a colourful background.

The equipment we used was....cups, vinegar, dye, film cannisters, paper and alka-seltzer tablets.  The dye was for the colour and the vinegar and alka-seltzer were to make it fizz so that it could explode.  The film cannisters were used so that we had something to put the tablet and vinegar in and the cups were used to mix the vinegar and dye together.

To make the colour we mixed the dye and vinegar in the cups.  miyah and I chose red and orange as our colours.  Once everyone had chosen theirs we went up to KCC to do the explosions.

Outside KCC we practised to click the lids onto the film cannisters because if we didn't click it on properly the experiment wouldn't work.

After we had practised we poured our coloured vinegar into the film cannister.  Miyah and I went first!

Four Pirates, 50 toothpicks, 150 marshmallows and 25 minutes........

The time goes off and me and my team make triangles.  (In case you didn't know, triangles are the strongest shapes.) until we realised we didn't really have a plan.  So.....we made a pirate ship.  And since we had ten minutes to spare we counted the left over marshmallows.  There were 73.

KaPoof Colours

On Thursday we did some maths and made explosions.  We did it for maths.  Room Five did it.  We did the cup bit in class but the explosions outside Care Centre.

When we got there, Mrs C sellotaped four pieces of paper together to do our rockets on.  We poured some vinegar and dye in a film cannister.  We had to practise putting the lid on.  The best one was Sams because it bounced off the ground t the roof.  When it was Taylor and my turn, Taylor closed the lid after I poured the mixture in.
